DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MODEL A AND MODERN DESIGN PRACTICES


If compared to a modern four-cylinder engine design, the Model A engine differs and is deficient from modern design practices in several areas as itemized below:

 A Model A engine has three main bearings compared to the five main bearings found in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has small diameter longer bearings compared to the large diameter shorter bearings found in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has poured babbitt bearings compared to the replaceable insert bearings in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has a gravity feed (mains) and dip (connecting rods) oil system compared to the full pressure oil system in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has a slinger type rear main seal compared to a radial lip rear main seal in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has no counterweights on the crankshaft compared to a fully counterweighted crankshaft in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has a restricted intake port design compared to the better flowing design found in a modern engine.

A Model A engine has no valve seats compared to the steel ring seats in a modern engine.
